But in SM, even though I'm apparently more than two thirds of the way through a long subcampaign, they are still very weak, vulnerable and unexceptional units. In the previous games I would always manage to easily level up the heroes not only through all these special levels, but also add considerably to their attack and defence stats with further upgrades until they were really kick-a$$ units. I haven't even managed to advance them through all their available special skills, let alone all possible "Hits +2 Moves +4" upgrades and so on. For example, I've played two of the "hard" scenarios and am part way through the third but my heroes are scarcely any stronger than they were at the beginning. I'm currently enjoying revisiting the game, but one thing I've noticed which seems to be very different to the previous game is that my heroes just don't seem to advance anymore. I bought Shadow Magic shortly after it came out, but after playing a couple of scenarios, I suddenly got sick of the game and didn't go back to it until recently.
